Maybe you know something isn't feeling right.

You're overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, stuck in your head, struggling in your relationship, adjusting to a major life change, or simply not feeling like yourself.

But when you start looking for therapy, suddenly you're expected to know:

Do I need anxiety therapy? Trauma therapy? Couples therapy? CBT? A specific therapist?

You don't have to figure that out on your own.

At Beyond Happiness Counselling, we can help you find a therapist in Kitchener-Waterloo who fits your concerns, goals, personality and preferences.

You can start by telling us what's going on. We'll help you figure out where to go from there.

What brings you to therapy?

You don't need a diagnosis to start therapy.

You may be looking for support because:

“I'm anxious all the time.”

You may be dealing with constant worry, overthinking, panic, fear, physical anxiety symptoms or difficulty switching your mind off.

“Everything feels like too much.”

You may be overwhelmed by work, parenting, relationships, responsibilities or simply the number of things on your plate.

“Something happened and I can't seem to move past it.”

You may be experiencing the effects of a difficult or traumatic experience, whether it happened recently or years ago.

“My relationship isn't where I want it to be.”

You may be struggling with communication, recurring arguments, emotional distance, trust, intimacy, parenting differences or a major relationship decision.

“My life has changed and I don't feel like myself anymore.”

“Pregnancy or becoming a parent has been harder than I expected.”

“I'm struggling with parenting.”

Parenting can bring stress, guilt, exhaustion, uncertainty and changes in your relationship with yourself and others.

“I'm looking for therapy for my teenager.”

Your teen may be struggling with anxiety, school pressure, self esteem, friendships, family conflict, emotional regulation or a major life change.

“I don't really know what's wrong.”

That's okay too.

Sometimes the most accurate description is simply: “I don't feel like myself.”

You don't need to have the right words before you contact us.

What if I don't know what type of therapy I need?

You don't need to diagnose yourself before starting therapy.

In fact, many people come to us without knowing exactly what kind of support they need.

You might know that:

  • You feel different lately

  • You're more overwhelmed than usual

  • Your relationship is struggling

  • You're reacting in ways you don't understand

  • Something from your past keeps affecting you

  • You feel stuck

  • You're struggling to cope with a change

  • You want to understand yourself better

  • You know you want something to change

That's enough to start a conversation.

Your therapist can help you understand what may be contributing to what you're experiencing and work with you to identify meaningful goals for therapy.

How do I choose the right therapist?

Finding a therapist is about more than finding someone with the right credentials.

The relationship between you and your therapist matters.

You may want to consider:

What are you hoping to work on?

Think about the main reason you are looking for support.

You don't need a perfect explanation. A few sentences about what has been difficult can be enough.

Do you have a preference for a therapist?

Some people feel more comfortable with a particular gender, age range, communication style or personality.

There is no right or wrong preference.

Feeling comfortable with your therapist can make it easier to be open and honest.

Do you prefer in person or virtual therapy?

Beyond Happiness Counselling offers in person therapy in Waterloo and virtual therapy across Ontario.

Some people prefer the privacy and routine of an office.

Others find it easier to attend therapy from home.

Are there specific areas of experience you are looking for?

You may want a therapist with experience supporting concerns such as anxiety, trauma, relationships, pregnancy, postpartum changes, parenting, teens or life transitions.

If you are unsure, we can help you identify who may be a good fit.

What if I have several things I want to work on?

What if I have never been to therapy before?

That's very common.

Mental health concerns rarely exist in neat categories.

For example, you may be experiencing anxiety because of a major life transition.

Relationship conflict may be connected to stress.

Parenting challenges may be affecting your relationship.

Past experiences may be influencing how you respond to current situations.

Therapy does not require you to choose one problem and ignore everything else.

Your therapist can help you understand how different parts of your life connect.

You are not expected to know how therapy works.

Your first session is an opportunity to meet your therapist, talk about what brought you in and begin figuring out what you would like support with.

You don't need to prepare a perfect explanation.

You don't need to know the right terminology.

You don't need to know what therapeutic approach you want.

You can simply tell your therapist:

“I'm not really sure where to start.”

That's a perfectly reasonable place to begin.

What happens after I contact Beyond Happiness Counselling?

When you reach out, we'll help you figure out the next step.

Depending on what you're looking for, we can help you identify a therapist based on:

  • Your main concerns

  • Your age or stage of life

  • Whether you are looking for individual, couples or teen therapy

  • Your preferred therapy format

  • Therapist availability

  • Areas of experience

  • Whether you prefer in person or virtual sessions

You don't need to spend hours comparing therapist profiles before contacting us.

Tell us what you're looking for, and we'll help you navigate the options.

Individual, couples or teen therapy?

Sometimes the biggest question isn't which therapist.

It's who should come to therapy?

Individual therapy

Individual therapy provides a private space to focus on your own experiences, emotions, relationships, patterns and goals.

It may be a good fit if you are experiencing anxiety, stress, trauma, life changes, parenting challenges, self-esteem concerns or simply want space to understand yourself better.

Couples therapy

Couples therapy provides a shared space to work on communication, conflict, trust, intimacy, parenting differences and other relationship concerns.

Teen therapy

Teen therapy gives teenagers a supportive space to talk about anxiety, school stress, friendships, family relationships, self-esteem, emotions and life changes.

You don't need to wait until you're in crisis to seek therapy.

Therapy can be useful when something is interfering with your life, relationships or sense of wellbeing.

It can also be a place to reflect, understand yourself better, develop new skills and make changes before things become more difficult.

You don't have to prove that you're struggling enough to deserve support.

What if I don't connect with my therapist?

Finding the right therapist can take time.

A therapist can be experienced and qualified while still not being the right personality or approach for you.

If you don't feel a connection with your therapist, that doesn't necessarily mean therapy isn't for you.

It may simply mean you need a different fit.

At Beyond Happiness Counselling, we have a team of therapists with different personalities, experiences and areas of focus.

If your first therapist doesn't feel like the right match, we can help you explore another option within our team where appropriate.
