Sometimes a change of environment can make it easier to breathe, think and talk.

Walk & Talk therapy combines psychotherapy with gentle movement and time outdoors. Instead of sitting in a traditional therapy room, you and your therapist walk together while having your session.

At Beyond Happiness Counselling, Walk & Talk therapy is available in Kitchener Waterloo for clients who feel that moving, being outdoors or having a less traditional therapy environment may help them feel more comfortable and engaged.

Walk & Talk sessions can be especially appealing if you are working through anxiety, stress, life transitions, feeling overwhelmed or simply want to experience therapy in a different way.

You don't have to sit still to do meaningful therapy.

What is Walk & Talk therapy?

Walk & Talk therapy is psychotherapy that takes place while the therapist and client walk together outdoors.

The therapeutic conversation remains the focus. The difference is the environment and the addition of gentle movement.

Instead of sitting in an office, you may walk along a suitable outdoor route while talking with your therapist about the things you would normally explore in a counselling session.

Walk & Talk therapy can still involve reflection, emotional processing, skill building, coping strategies, relationship exploration and goal setting.

It is not simply going for a walk with someone.

It is therapy that happens while walking.

Who can benefit from Walk & Talk therapy?

Walk & Talk therapy can be a good fit for people who:

  • Feel more comfortable talking while moving

  • Find traditional office settings uncomfortable

  • Enjoy being outdoors

  • Feel restless when sitting for long periods

  • Want a different therapy environment

  • Find movement helps them think

  • Feel overwhelmed or stressed

  • Are navigating a major life transition

  • Want space to reflect while walking

  • Prefer a less formal feeling therapy environment

You do not need to be athletic or particularly active.

The focus is not exercise.

The pace can be comfortable and adapted to what works for you.

What can Walk & Talk therapy help with?

Walk & Talk therapy can be used to explore many of the same concerns addressed through traditional psychotherapy.

Depending on your therapist's experience and areas of practice, this may include:

  • Anxiety

  • Stress and overwhelm

  • Life transitions

  • Parenting challenges

  • Relationship concerns

  • Self esteem

  • Emotional regulation

  • Feeling stuck

  • Work and career stress

  • Major decisions

  • Identity changes

  • Difficult emotions

  • Personal growth and self-reflection

Walk & Talk therapy is a format for therapy rather than a separate diagnosis or treatment for one specific concern.

Your therapist will help determine whether it is an appropriate fit for your goals.

Why do people choose therapy while walking?

Walk & Talk therapy for anxiety and stress

For some people, sitting face to face in a therapy room can feel uncomfortable.

Walking side by side can create a different conversational dynamic.

You are not required to maintain eye contact throughout the conversation, and there can be natural moments of silence while you walk.

For some clients, movement can also help them feel less physically stuck when discussing difficult topics.

Being outdoors may provide a greater sense of openness and space.

There is no single reason why someone chooses Walk & Talk therapy.

Sometimes it simply feels more natural.

When you are anxious or overwhelmed, sitting still and trying to explain everything you are feeling can sometimes feel like another task.

Walking can introduce gentle movement into the session while still giving you space to talk.

Walk & Talk therapy may be an option for people experiencing:

  • Constant stress

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Racing thoughts

  • Work related stress

  • Parenting stress

  • Anxiety

  • Difficulty slowing down

  • Feeling mentally stuck

  • Major life changes

Walk & Talk therapy for life transitions

Some of life's biggest changes can leave you with a lot to think about.

You might be becoming a parent, changing careers, navigating a relationship transition, adjusting to a new stage of life or simply questioning what you want next.

Walking can create physical space for reflection while you explore what the transition means to you.

Therapy can help you slow down, identify what matters, work through uncertainty and consider what you want your next chapter to look like.

What does a Walk & Talk session look like?

Your session will still have the structure and purpose of psychotherapy.

At the beginning, you and your therapist may briefly check in about how you are doing and what you would like to focus on.

You will then walk together while having your therapy conversation.

Depending on what you are working on, your therapist may help you:

  • Explore thoughts and emotions

  • Identify patterns

  • Process difficult experiences

  • Practise coping strategies

  • Work through decisions

  • Explore relationship concerns

  • Develop practical skills

  • Set goals

  • Reflect on changes you want to make

Your therapist will continue to provide the same professional therapeutic support they would in an office based session.

Do I have to walk fast?

What happens if I don't want to walk the whole time?

No.

Walk & Talk therapy is not exercise therapy.

You do not need to walk quickly, keep a particular pace or be physically fit.

The goal is to find a comfortable pace that allows you to talk and engage with the session.

Your therapist can also discuss whether another format would be more appropriate if walking is uncomfortable for you.

That's okay.

The format can be flexible depending on the setting, your comfort level and the therapist's approach.

You can discuss your preferences with your therapist before beginning Walk & Talk therapy.

The goal is for the environment to support the therapeutic process rather than become another source of pressure.

Is Walk & Talk therapy confidential?

Confidentiality remains an important part of therapy.

However, an outdoor therapy environment is different from a private office.

There may be other people, cyclists, dogs, traffic or other members of the public nearby. Your therapist cannot control who may see you or overhear part of a conversation.

Before beginning Walk & Talk therapy, your therapist should discuss the practical privacy considerations with you so you can make an informed decision about whether the format feels comfortable.

You can also agree on how you would like to handle situations where someone you know is encountered during a walk.

Where does Walk & Talk therapy take place?

Walk & Talk therapy takes place outdoors in the Kitchener Waterloo area at an appropriate location agreed upon with your therapist.

The specific route or location may depend on the therapist, weather, accessibility, privacy considerations and the client's needs.

Before your first Walk & Talk session, your therapist will provide information about where to meet and what to expect.

What happens if it rains or the weather is bad?

Is Walk & Talk therapy appropriate for trauma?

Outdoor therapy depends on the weather and seasonal conditions.

If weather makes walking uncomfortable or unsafe, your therapist can discuss alternative arrangements, such as moving the session indoors or meeting virtually where appropriate.

The priority is always safety and creating an environment where you can participate meaningfully in therapy.

It depends on the individual and what they are working through.

Walk & Talk therapy may be appropriate for some clients who are processing difficult experiences, while other situations may be better suited to an indoor therapy environment.

Your therapist can discuss the benefits and limitations of Walk & Talk therapy with you and determine whether the format is appropriate for your goals.

Is Walk & Talk therapy appropriate for couples?

Walk & Talk can potentially be used with couples depending on the therapist, location and goals of therapy.

Because couples therapy often involves emotionally important conversations and privacy considerations, your therapist will discuss whether an outdoor setting is appropriate for your particular circumstances.

What should I wear to Walk & Talk therapy?

What if I have mobility concerns?

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for walking outdoors.

You do not need special equipment or workout clothing.

Dress according to the weather and bring anything you would normally need for a comfortable outdoor walk.

Let your therapist know before booking a Walk & Talk session.

The format can be discussed in relation to your mobility, comfort, accessibility needs and the available location.

If walking is not the right fit, traditional in person or virtual therapy may be a better option.

Walk & Talk therapy versus traditional therapy

Both formats can provide professional psychotherapy.

The main difference is the environment.

Traditional therapy:
You meet with your therapist in a private office and remain seated throughout the session.

Walk & Talk therapy:
You meet outdoors and walk together while having your therapy conversation.

Some people prefer the structure and privacy of an office.

Others find that walking makes therapy feel more natural.

There is no requirement to choose one format permanently. Your therapist can help you determine what works best for you.

What happens in your first Walk & Talk session?

Is Walk & Talk therapy right for me?

Your first session will usually include time to get to know your therapist and discuss what brought you to therapy.

You can talk about:

  • What you would like support with

  • Your goals for therapy

  • What you hope will change

  • Your previous experiences with therapy

  • Why Walk & Talk appeals to you

  • Any concerns about privacy or the outdoor setting

  • Accessibility or physical considerations

  • What would help you feel comfortable

You do not need to know exactly what you want to talk about before your first session.

You may want to consider Walk & Talk therapy if the idea of talking while walking feels more comfortable or natural than sitting in an office.

It may be worth exploring if:

  • You enjoy being outdoors

  • Movement helps you think

  • You feel restless during traditional therapy

  • You prefer talking side by side

  • You want a different therapeutic environment

  • You are navigating stress or overwhelm

  • You are working through a life transition

  • You want space to reflect and process

If you are unsure, you can talk with your therapist about whether Walk & Talk would be a good fit.
