Having a baby can bring love, joy and moments you never expected. It can also bring anxiety, exhaustion, identity changes, relationship struggles and a feeling that you don't quite recognize yourself anymore.

You don't have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out.

At Beyond Happiness, we provide warm, supportive postpartum therapy in Kitchener-Waterloo and virtual counselling across Ontario for new parents navigating the transition into parenthood.

You can love your baby and still be struggling. Both can be true.

You don't have to be struggling “enough” to ask for support

“I feel overwhelmed all the time.”

“I can't switch my brain off.”

“I don't feel like myself anymore.”

“I love my baby, but I miss who I was.”

“Why does everyone else seem to be coping better than me?”

“I'm constantly worried something is going to happen to my baby.”

“My relationship feels completely different since having a baby.”

“I'm touched out and I don't want anyone else to need anything from me.”

“I feel guilty asking for help.”

“I thought I would enjoy this more.”

“I don't even know what I need. I just know I'm struggling.”

If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

Postpartum therapy isn't only for people experiencing postpartum depression. Therapy can also provide a space to process the enormous emotional, physical and relational changes that come with becoming a parent.

There is so much pressure to feel grateful, happy and completely in love with becoming a parent.

But sometimes the reality looks more like:

Step by step, we'll help you find steadiness in the storm.

What is postpartum therapy?

Postpartum therapy is counselling designed to support your mental and emotional well-being during the months following the birth of your baby.

IMG_3962.JPG

The postpartum period can involve much more than adjusting to a new sleep schedule. You may be navigating changes in your identity, body, relationships, routines, independence, expectations and sense of self.

For some parents, this transition brings symptoms of postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety. For others, the main challenge may be feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, resentful, isolated or unsure of who they are now.

You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy.

Our therapists provide a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can slow down, make sense of what you're experiencing and explore what support might look like for you.

What can postpartum therapy help with?

Our therapists support new parents experiencing a wide range of emotional and relationship concerns, including:

Postpartum anxiety

You may find yourself constantly worrying about your baby's health, sleep, development or safety. Your mind may feel like it is always scanning for what could go wrong.

Therapy can help you understand anxious thought patterns and develop ways to respond to them without allowing anxiety to take over your day.

Postpartum depression

Postpartum depression can involve persistent sadness, hopelessness, guilt, irritability, loss of interest, emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself or your baby.

You don't have to figure out whether what you're experiencing “counts” as postpartum depression before reaching out.

Feeling overwhelmed or touched out

Sometimes there is simply too much.

Someone needs you all day. Your body doesn't feel like your own. You haven't had enough sleep. You are constantly making decisions and there never seems to be a break.

Therapy can provide a place where, for once, you don't have to be the person taking care of everyone else.

Identity changes

Becoming a parent can change how you see yourself.

You may be wondering:

Who am I now?

You can love being a parent and still miss parts of your old life.

Therapy can help you explore your changing identity without judgment and make space for the parts of you that existed before motherhood or parenthood.

Relationship changes after having a baby

Having a baby can change the way partners communicate, divide responsibilities, spend time together and experience intimacy.

You may feel disconnected from your partner, frustrated by the mental load, or like you're constantly arguing about things that never used to matter.

Postpartum therapy can provide space to understand these changes and work toward greater communication, connection and emotional intimacy.

Parenting stress and overwhelm

There can be an enormous amount of pressure to make the “right” choices as a parent.

Feeding. Sleep. Childcare. Development. Work. Family expectations. Social media. Everyone seems to have an opinion.

Therapy can help you step back from the noise and reconnect with what matters to you and your family.

Birth experiences and trauma

Sometimes birth doesn't go the way you expected.

A difficult labour, emergency intervention, unexpected complications, NICU experience or feeling powerless during birth can leave you with emotions that are difficult to process.

Therapy can provide a safe place to explore your experience at your own pace.

Can postpartum anxiety happen without postpartum depression?

Yes.

Postpartum anxiety can occur on its own, alongside depression, or as part of a broader perinatal mental health concern.

You might notice:

  • constant worry about your baby

  • difficulty relaxing even when your baby is safe

  • racing thoughts

  • feeling on edge or unable to switch off

  • panic attacks

  • repeatedly checking on your baby

  • fear of being alone with your baby

  • distressing intrusive thoughts

Intrusive thoughts can be particularly frightening for new parents. Having an unwanted, distressing thought does not automatically mean you want to act on it.

If you are experiencing frightening thoughts, significant anxiety or distress, talking with a qualified mental health professional can help you understand what is happening and determine what support you need.

“I love my baby, but I don't feel like myself.”

What about my relationship after having a baby?

This is something many new parents struggle to put into words.

You can be deeply in love with your baby and still feel exhausted, angry, lonely, bored, anxious, disconnected or unsure of yourself.

You can be grateful and overwhelmed.

You can miss your independence and still love being a parent.

You can wish for a break without wishing your baby wasn't there.

There is no single way you are supposed to feel after having a baby.

Therapy can give you a place to talk honestly about the thoughts and feelings you may not feel comfortable sharing anywhere else.

IMG_3444_edited.jpg

A new baby changes the relationship too.

You may notice:

“We're more like roommates than partners.”

“I'm doing everything and they don't understand why I'm exhausted.”

“We keep having the same argument.”

“I don't feel emotionally connected anymore.”

“We haven't had time for each other.”

“I'm struggling with intimacy.”

These changes are common, but that doesn't mean you have to navigate them alone.

Depending on your needs, therapy may be individual or couples-based. We can help you explore communication, expectations, emotional connection, parenting responsibilities and the transition your relationship is experiencing.

Can I bring my baby to therapy

Yes. Your baby is welcome.

IMG_3987.JPEG

We know that finding childcare can be one more impossible task when you're already overwhelmed.

For postpartum sessions, you are welcome to bring your baby with you.

Your baby may need to feed, cry, be changed, move around or simply be with you during your appointment.

That's okay.

Therapy doesn't have to look like a perfectly quiet room with a perfectly calm baby.

We want therapy to fit into your life — not create another thing you have to organize perfectly.

We also offer virtual therapy across Ontario, which can be helpful when getting out of the house feels like too much.

What does postpartum therapy actually look like?

what has changed since having your baby

your emotional well-being

anxiety, stress or low mood

your identity and expectations around parenthood

your relationship and support system

the mental load of parenting

boundaries with family and others

difficult pregnancy or birth experiences

patterns that may be keeping you stuck

practical tools for coping and emotional regulation

Our therapists draw from different evidence-based approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness-based approaches, trauma-informed therapy and couples therapy approaches.

Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to find an approach that fits your needs.

Living Room

There is no single postpartum therapy formula.

Your first session is a chance to talk about what has been happening and what brought you to therapy.

You don't need to arrive with a diagnosis, a treatment plan or even a clear explanation.

Together, we may explore:

Step by step, we'll help you find steadiness in the storm.

When should I consider postpartum therapy?

  • you feel overwhelmed most days

  • anxiety is interfering with your ability to relax or function

  • you are experiencing persistent sadness, irritability or emotional numbness

  • you feel disconnected from yourself or others

  • you're struggling with guilt or feeling like you're not a “good enough” parent

  • your relationship has become difficult to navigate

  • you're having trouble adjusting to your new identity

  • a pregnancy, birth or postpartum experience has stayed with you emotionally

  • you feel isolated or unsupported

  • you're constantly worrying about your baby

  • you simply have a feeling that something isn't quite right

You don't have to wait until things become a crisis.

You may want to consider reaching out if:

You don't need to prove that you're struggling enough to deserve support.

Frequently asked questions about postpartum therapy

Do I need postpartum depression to see a postpartum therapist? No. Postpartum therapy can support many different experiences, including anxiety, overwhelm, identity changes, relationship difficulties, birth experiences, parenting stress and adjustment to becoming a parent.

Can I see a therapist if my baby is with me? Yes. Babies are welcome during postpartum sessions at Beyond Happiness Counselling. You don't need to arrange childcare in order to attend therapy.

Can postpartum anxiety happen without postpartum depression? Yes. Postpartum anxiety can occur on its own or alongside depression. Persistent or overwhelming anxiety after having a baby is worth discussing with a healthcare or mental health professional.

What if I don't feel connected to my baby? Feeling differently than you expected does not make you a bad parent. Bonding can take time, and difficult emotions around parenthood are something you can talk about in therapy without judgment.

Can therapy help with relationship problems after having a baby? Yes. You can work with a therapist individually or explore couples therapy if you and your partner are experiencing communication difficulties, disconnection, conflict or challenges adjusting to parenthood together.

Is postpartum therapy only for mothers? No. Pregnancy and becoming a parent can affect many different people. Partners and non-birthing parents can also experience anxiety, depression, stress, identity changes and relationship challenges during the transition into parenthood.

Is virtual postpartum therapy available? Yes. Beyond Happiness Counselling offers virtual therapy across Ontario.

How do I find a postpartum therapist in Kitchener-Waterloo? Look for a therapist who has experience with perinatal and postpartum mental health and whose approach feels like a good fit for you. At Beyond Happiness Counselling, our team can help you find a therapist based on your concerns, preferences and availability.

You don't have to do this perfectly.

Parenthood can be beautiful, exhausting, confusing, joyful and overwhelming — sometimes all in the same day.

If you're struggling with the transition into parenthood, you deserve a space where you can be honest about how you're actually doing.

A note about urgent support

Therapy can provide meaningful support for postpartum mental health concerns, but it isn't a replacement for emergency care.

If you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, hallucinations, delusions, severe confusion, or feel that you or your baby may be in immediate danger, seek urgent medical or emergency support.

If you're unsure how serious your symptoms are, reaching out to a healthcare professional is an appropriate first step.
