Sometimes life is simply demanding.

Work, relationships, parenting, family responsibilities, finances, major life changes and everyday tasks can gradually add up until you feel like you are running on empty.

You may still be functioning. You may still be getting everything done.

But internally, you might be thinking:

“I can't keep doing this at this pace.”

At Beyond Happiness Counselling, we provide stress and overwhelm therapy in Kitchener Waterloo and virtually across Ontario for teens and adults who feel emotionally overloaded, exhausted or stretched too thin.

What does stress and overwhelm feel like?

  • Feel constantly busy but never caught up

  • Have difficulty relaxing

  • Feel mentally or emotionally exhausted

  • Become more irritable or impatient

  • Feel overwhelmed by small tasks

  • Struggle to concentrate

  • Have difficulty sleeping

  • Feel like everyone needs something from you

  • Have little energy left for yourself

  • Find it difficult to enjoy things you normally enjoy

  • Feel guilty when you rest

  • Say yes when you really want to say no

  • Feel responsible for keeping everything together

  • Constantly think about what needs to happen next

Sometimes the hardest part is that you are still functioning.

You may wonder why you feel so exhausted when, from the outside, you seem to be managing.

Stress doesn't always look like a crisis.

You might:

What can stress therapy help with?

Therapy can help you understand what is contributing to your stress and identify what needs to change.

Feeling overwhelmed
When your mental load feels endless, therapy can help you separate what is urgent from what is important, identify what is within your control and explore where you may be taking on too much.

Emotional exhaustion
You may not feel sad or anxious exactly. You may simply feel depleted.

Therapy can help you understand what is draining you and create space to reconnect with your needs.

Work and career stress
Work stress can follow you home, affect your relationships and make it difficult to switch off.

Therapy can provide space to explore workplace pressure, perfectionism, boundaries, difficult professional relationships and the impact of work on your overall wellbeing.

Parenting stress
Parenting can involve a significant mental and emotional load.

You may feel responsible for everyone else's needs while having very little space for your own.

Therapy can help with parental stress, guilt, boundaries, expectations, decision fatigue and the emotional demands of parenting.

People pleasing and difficulty saying no
If you regularly put other people's needs ahead of your own, you may eventually feel resentful, exhausted or disconnected from yourself.

Therapy can help you explore the beliefs and fears that make boundaries difficult.

Perfectionism
Trying to do everything perfectly can create an enormous amount of pressure.

Therapy can help you explore where these expectations come from and develop a more sustainable way of approaching yourself, your responsibilities and your relationships.

Stress during major life transitions
Even positive changes can be stressful.

Moving, starting or leaving a job, becoming a parent, changes in relationships, loss, separation and other major transitions can leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Therapy can provide support while you adjust to what has changed.

Stress, anxiety and burnout: what's the difference?
Stress, anxiety and burnout can overlap, but they are not exactly the same.

Stress is often connected to demands or pressures in your life.

Anxiety can involve persistent fear or worry that may continue even when there is no immediate threat.

Burnout can develop after prolonged or unmanaged stress and may involve emotional exhaustion, reduced motivation and feeling disconnected from work or other responsibilities.

You don't need to figure out which label applies to you before reaching out.

That can be part of the conversation in therapy.

Why do I feel overwhelmed when I'm still coping?
Because functioning and feeling okay are not necessarily the same thing.

You may be meeting deadlines, caring for your children, showing up at work and maintaining your relationships while internally feeling completely depleted.

Therapy isn't necessarily about teaching you to handle more.

Sometimes the more important questions are:

What are you carrying?

Why are you carrying it?

What could change?

Do I need to change my whole life?

When should I consider therapy for stress?

Not necessarily.

Therapy isn't about telling you to quit your job, become less productive or simply “take more time for yourself.”

Sometimes meaningful change starts with something smaller:

Learning to say no.

Setting one boundary.

Asking for help.

Changing an expectation.

Recognizing that something isn't sustainable.

Understanding why you feel responsible for everything.

Your therapist can help you identify changes that make sense for your circumstances.

You may benefit from support if stress is:

  • Affecting your sleep

  • Affecting your relationships

  • Affecting your work

  • Making you more irritable or emotional

  • Leaving you constantly exhausted

  • Making everyday responsibilities feel overwhelming

  • Affecting your ability to enjoy your life

  • Causing you to neglect your own needs

  • Making it difficult to be present with the people you care about

  • Leaving you feeling disconnected from yourself

You don't have to wait until you completely burn out.
